Introduction to Help I'm Trapped in a Body! The Power of the Total Body Matrixsm

More Than Just a Body

I lived most of my adult Life worrying about how my body looked. Sound familiar? I believed early on that if you had a “pretty one,” it could gain you favors and attention. I, therefore, did everything I could to stay thin, well dressed, and be noticed. I did this all at the expense of my health, but at the time I had no real awareness about that. It was only after a Life-threatening automobile accident, when my face needed 150 stitches, my right thighbone (femur) was snapped in half, and my ribs were crushed, that I began to see things a little differently. Until that time, I had no thought past my physicality. I was like most everyone else. We think of ourselves as just a Physical Body. When we describe someone, we list their physical characteristics, adding to it other physical aspects, such as who the spouse and children are, where the person lives, what company he or she works for, etc.

But we are more than that. We come fully loaded with not just one, but four bodies: the Mental Body, the Emotional Body, that all-familiar Physical Body, and the Spiritual Body. (When I speak of the Emotional Body, I am including the Psychological Body.) These four are our essence, they are what we are made of and totally describes us — our Total Body Matrixsm.

These four bodies make up the wholeness of what or who we are, but because we are so caught up in the physical, we find it hard to accept this. In looking at this complex creation, where all parts are interconnected, interactive, and yet totally unique, I feel awe-struck. We are a complicated Matrix of systems, signals, and symbols. We think that if we cannot feel it or see it or smell it or hear it or taste it, it must not be real. We say that anything that is not tangible is not reality.

Yet, there are elements in our lives that we cannot detect with our senses alone. We cannot sense carbon monoxide, until it is too late. We cannot see radio waves. We cannot hear the high frequency communication of elephants and whales. And we know they all exist. We have machines that can detect them, and we see the physical manifestation of their existence. As science and human beings evolve, we are finding tools and machines that allow us to “see” that which until now was “invisible” and, therefore, by our definition, did not exist. So, the line between real and unreal, what is and what is not reality, is constantly shifting.

We cannot sense our Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Bodies in the same way we can our Physical Body, but we know they exist. We know we have thoughts. Even though we cannot see or touch our thoughts, we know our minds are constantly at work. We know we have feelings, and we see what happens when we are angry or happy or stressed. And while some of us may take it as a matter of faith, many of us know there is a spiritual world. Like me, some have had near- death or out-of-body experiences; others have been “touched” by those who have passed from this world; and there are those who have survived situations where only help from “the other side” could explain what happened.

It is important for us to know that not only do these four bodies exist, they are interconnected. One of the four bodies of the Matrix cannot perform without affecting the other three. We cannot have a thought that does not affect our emotional system. We cannot have a thought that does not affect our Physical Body. And the same is true for the spiritual system.

We have evidence of this interrelationship of our Matrix. If we see a gun pointed our way, our dominant emotion is fear, and our body reacts with a racing heartbeat. Our dominant thought is, “This is a Life-threatening situation, and I need to get out of here NOW!” Our body reacts by running away, or by paralyzing in extreme fright. Our dominant spiritual reaction is likely a prayer for help.

If we, instead, see our three-year-old after a week’s absence, our dominant emotion is likely to be love, and our body reacts by warming up as a smile spreads broadly over our face. Our dominant thought is, “I missed you so,” and our body reacts by reaching out to him. Our dominant spiritual reaction is possibly gratitude for such a wonderful child, and our body radiates more warmth.

All four of our body’s systems are interconnected. Nothing happens in one that does not affect the others. That is the magic and the beauty of our Total Body Matrixsm, however, this interrelationship goes even further. There is also a Universal Matrix System. We realize that what any one of us feels and/or experiences will have an impact beyond ourselves, affecting others as well. We are all connected.

For example, consider what can happen at a social gathering. We are excited about going because it has been a while since we have had such a special event to attend. We finally have an excuse to get dressed up and put on that new outfit. We know we will have a good time, and we are looking forward to it. Then we join the party, and reality hits us. All of the wonderful anticipation and excitement begin to dissolve.

Everyone seems very solemn and quiet; they certainly don’t seem to be having a good time, and it looks like we will not either, nor will anyone likely even notice our new outfit.

How do we react since our upbeat attitude seems totally inappropriate? We approach one of the small groups of people. They are talking about how business is not going well, someone’s wife wrecked the new car, and someone’s brother-in-law just got fired. Everything is so negative. Pretty soon we start feeling the same way. We think, “Man, Life really is rotten. There are so many things wrong. How could I ever have felt good about it?”

We want agreement, which equates to acknowledgment. We want to fit in. Our positive, this-is-going-to-be-fun attitude does not match the other attitudes, so we adapt. We take on their negative attitude instead. We seek connection with others, therefore, we bury our happy thoughts and switch to doom and gloom. We volunteer how, “That remodeling crew we had do our living room really botched the job. The colors were all wrong.” Suddenly we are finding fault everywhere with our Life.

After a while, long after our initial excitement has been replaced with negativity, we decide to leave. We’ve had enough, but we carry that negative attitude with us. We are depressed, and now we spread that to others we meet. Worse, with such a down-and-out attitude, we attract people who have a similar outlook, feeding on each other’s negativity. Before we know it, we are all commiserating about how awful Life is.

It is important to understand that because we are so interconnected, we have an effect on each other. Just as when we first joined that party, nothing needed to be said for us to be affected by another. We sensed the black cloud hanging over the party before anyone even spoke to us.

We have all heard the expression that one bad apple spoils the whole barrel. This is exactly what happens when the negative attitude of one person overwhelms and infects the positive feelings of others.

Take a moment and think back to the last time this happened to you. Remember a time when you were feeling great about your Life and Life in general. Recall that feeling, the emotions of it, how it felt in your body, your mental attitude and your spiritual sense of being connected to the whole universe. Then an outside negative influence occurred, perhaps something you read or heard on the television, or something someone said. Did you begin to lose your sense of well-being? You may discover that the simple memory of the experience can begin to negatively influence your Matrix even now. Take a few deep breaths, move your focus back to the positive memories, and release the negative effects.

Much like those apples in a barrel, each person’s impact is far-reaching. We are attracted to those with similar feelings. We can sense others’ feelings or vibrations, and because of the Law of Attraction, we are drawn to them.

The Law of Attraction says that what we draw toward ourselves is a reflection of what we are feeling or the messages we are sending out. It does not matter whether the feelings are happy or sad, loving or fearful, good or bad. Like attracts like.

The previous example was of one negative attitude affecting another. And good feelings are equally infectious; this is a very important fact to remember. Think about a complete stranger, a store clerk or someone just passing us on the street who gives us a heart-felt “Good morning” with a smile. Suddenly we, too, are smiling.

Like attracts like, and it is important to remember that we all have both the happy and sad within us. It is our choice to vibrate the positive or the negative feelings. And it is our choice to let others draw out, or infect us with, either the positive or negative.

We are not isolated creatures. What one of us does, whether we are in physical contact with others or not, affects everyone. Thoughts travel on a level beyond the spoken word. How we act, as well as what we think, affects others. And it is everyone who is affected, not just those in physical proximity to us. Our thoughts are not confined to physical boundaries.

This illustrates the importance that each one of us has in being here on this planet, in our country, in our own family. We are not, however isolated we may be, truly apart from one another. We are all interconnected and intertwined. It is the same idea with our Total Body Matrixsm. We think something, and we have a physical, spiritual, and emotional response.

This book will explore the complexity of our Total Body Matrixsm. It is within this Matrix that our four bodies are deeply intertwined. To understand our own unique Matrix we will first define and differentiate each aspect. This will help us to know what to protect and what needs attention beyond the Physical Body. Although within this Matrix all aspects are equal, there is a hierarchy to healing the Matrix and returning yourself to wholeness and balance. After a traumatic event, like my car accident, or a trauma you personally experience, or a global tragedy like September 11th, many of us think of physical safety, but we must take care of other aspects of ourselves as well.

Change does not operate only on a physical level; our entire Matrix is affected. This is evident in what has happened since September 11th. People who were not physically touched by the disasters were walking around in tremendous fear. Many were afraid to eat certain foods. They were afraid to leave, but afraid to stay, and they certainly did not want to fly anywhere. Everyday there was something else in the news to re-ignite those initial fears and bring out new ones. It all played a part in creating an emotional crisis, not only in the United States, but worldwide.

Trauma of any sort can disrupt our lives and create disharmony for months or years on end. If left unexamined, this trauma can cast its shadow over our entire Life and the lives of those that love and care about us. It hits each body in our Matrix.

· Mentally, we are in despair from our traumatized, repetitive thinking.

· Emotionally, we are fearful, anxious, and suffering from hopelessness, loss or whatever emotion is most prevalent for us.

· Physically, we may be injured, not sleeping or eating enough, or perhaps too much.

· Spiritually, many of us become mistrustful and wonder how God could have let this happen.

Our Total Body Matrixsm is activated on a very high level as each aspect responds to the event.

When we learn how our internal “community” (our Total Body Matrixsm) works, we can better understand how our external community of people (the Universal Matrix) works. We realize that we intertwine with all other living creatures. What we think, feel, say, and do affects the whole community. This is a tremendous responsibility and a tremendous opportunity. It means that, indeed, one individual can truly make a difference in the world.

In the following chapters we will learn how our Matrix works. We will see, for example, that when a traumatic event occurs, our whole system is affected.

· Physically, our nervous system reacts by shifting our heart rate and adrenaline production, tightening up our stomach, altering our blood flow, and more.

· Emotionally, we are afraid, anxious, and discontent.

· Mentally, we analyze the situation with questions such as, “What happened? Why? What will happen next?”

· Spiritually, we seek assurance and guidance.

All four of the bodies within the Total Body Matrixsm are impacted quite profoundly, with each one sending messages to the others to be on the alert. All four are trying to find a way to work cohesively toward the same outcome so they can return to a basic state of equilibrium. This is the magic and inherent beauty of the Total Body Matrixsm.

We call this balanced state homeostasis. It happens when all four bodies of the Total Body Matrixsm — Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual — are operating harmoniously together. The ideal is to function at the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness and with the greatest sense of ease.

When we are not in a state of homeostasis, it is not just our own Matrix that is out of balance; it is society as a whole that is impacted. When many individuals are lacking homeostasis, society’s homeostasis is disrupted, and the Universal Matrix is out of balance.

Stress in any form profoundly affects our equilibrium. When we as individuals are traumatized, our homeostasis is disrupted. Our desire is to return to that ideal, balanced state of being. We begin by addressing each area of the Matrix that has been traumatized, knowing that if one area or aspect has experienced a trauma, then all the other aspects are affected and suffering to some degree.

The same is true on a global level. We can see that the United States, in addition to other areas of the world, is operating as a dysfunctional society. The Total Body Matrixsm of so many in our society have been disrupted and traumatized that the impact is evident throughout the Universal Matrix.

People throughout the world are fearful. The experiences of September 11th, wars in Israel, Afghanistan, Iraq and other locations have created people having repetitive thoughts, wondering what is happening, what they can do, when it will end. Some people are pulling together for support while others have become disheartened and mistrustful. This apprehension is directed to their Higher Power, as well as to everyone else they interact with, even people they do not know. Emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, so many people are operating at a dysfunctional level that society as a whole is disrupted. And most people do not know it, nor do they want to look at it. It is certainly not about being negative or an alarmist. It is about noting what is happening in our inner world and our outer world. Remember, BE ALERT! STAY AWAKE!

The need for balance is tremendous. It is not just a few individuals who have lost their Matrix equilibrium; all of society has and needs to return to homeostasis to work at its best. The only way this will happen is if individuals do something. And therein lies the silver lining. Because we are all connected, what one does on an individual level affects not only the individual, but others as well. Each one of us can make a difference.

It begins here. We can be excited with the increased knowledge. We can use it as a wonderful opportunity to make a difference on a personal level and on a greater community level. What will it be? Will we be the one to change all of society in even a small way? Perhaps we will start a thought that becomes an action involving everyone. We can become conscious of what we are vibrating or feeling, and when that feeling is not uplifting, we can use our knowledge to change. We can change ourselves, and as we do, change society as well.

The silver lining shines with hope. A great opportunity lies before us. It is ours to take, or to leave. This is truly the best time of our lives, although when I was forced to sleep upright in the hospital bed for nearly six months, I may have argued that point. Today I am clear that it is not what happens in Life that is most important. What is truly important is how we respond or react to it. How we perceive Life and what actions we take determines our joy or our fear. When we do take action, we begin with awareness. We understand the impact of our thoughts upon our Total Body Matrixsm system and on others in our lives and on society as a whole. We then make conscious decisions about our thoughts and actions. As we continue, our wisdom and confidence grow. The clarity surges us into power. The power and desire instigate further change. The silver lining is that the choice is ours; we are the ones to determine our happiness.
